On a brisk, wet June evening. The Men's summer league rolls on.
In absence of Captain Nathan who delegated to Captain Pat, who further delegated to Captain Pete Young. We approached Bisham with optimism but not many players.
6 casualties and a goalkeeping transport situation made it spicy from the start. However, Santa delivering Christmas early in the GK form brightened our mood.
Sonning started brightly, with Doug running shuttles like it was just another marathon, and Nathaniel Paine being a nuisance up front. This paid off when after numerous picks off defenders, Sonning broke and Nathaniel nutmegged the keeper. 1-0 Sonning.
South Berks fought back though, with numerous SC chances which the rotating umpires couldn't help but give, and laugh at the fouls for them. But half time came with us 1-0 up.
Inspiration from Captain Pete... With a mouth full of Percy Pigs, he declared "Doing Well Guys. Beasely, anything from the back?" however we rallied and wanted to pass it round a tiring South Berks team in the second half.
Duly, Pat Wall almost cost us a goal immediately screwing it up from RB. Never playing there again. However Sonning continued to attack with purpose and ALB found himself through on goal and played a 4D chess level pass off the defender to deflect past the keeper to make it 2-0.
The game petered out from there, with umpire Pete making the world's most questionable calls (or lack of). However the crowning moment, was Santa, 3 yards out, goal at his mercy, on the volley, somehow putting it over the Bisham fence and thus the game had to end. He's apparently still looking for the ball as it's a Kookaburra Saturn and they aren't cheap.
Great win over local rivals, even in Summer League! Well done Captain Pete! Unbeaten so far in his reign.
