This match report is written by your DoD - Tobi Challis

The Sonning Men's 2s faced a challenging away match against Oxford University, who were keen to secure their first win of the season. With an early 10:30 pushback that didn’t quite allow the beer from the night before to settle, Sonning arrived determined to maintain their momentum. Compounded by a strong start from Thame in the league, Sonning found themselves no longer at the top of the table and eager to reclaim their winning form.

First Half: The match commenced on a very bouncy paint covered pitch after some recent line marking, Billy Oliver's Just Stop Oil antics remain well and truly closeted. The game quickly developed into an end-to-end affair, with both sides forging good attacks but failing to find the back of the net, with no help from yours truly.

Despite my best efforts to get an honorary degree from the Uni, It was Oliver Deacon who broke the deadlock, demonstrating exceptional composure as he slotted the ball past the Oxford keeper to put Sonning ahead 1-0. Meal deals and Costa breakfasts seem to be working a treat, looking forward to the Fiat 500 in the car park on Tuesday. Following the goal, Sonning continued to create numerous opportunities, but it was a solid defensive effort from the opposition that kept the scoreline unchanged with Oxford's keeper making some great saves.

As the half progressed, Sonning earned a couple of short corners. In a moment of brilliance, Deacon executed his signature backward swoosh to set up El Capitan. With precision, the captain flicked the ball into the near side of the net, extending Sonning’s lead to 2-0 as they headed into halftime. The most impressive part of this was executing it all while Cam was going off on one about Pete's dating life on Tinder, both equally as likely to be keeping clean sheets.

Second Half: The second half saw a continuation of the fast-paced play, with both teams exchanging chances. A well-worked interception led to a standout moment from Pete Young, who executed a fantastic individual goal, making it 3-0 for Sonning. In a surprising twist, this week, Young managed not to be outpaced by the opposition's keeper, sealing the deal with a confident finish.

In a juicy moment during the second half, Tim Greenbank had a bit of mischief up his sleeve. After a particularly intense play, he decided to nut a hockey stick in an attempt to get a chauffeur service home from Dr(iver) Jack. Dizzy Rascal out for the rest of game. Thoughts and prayers with Tim during this this time.

In the dying minutes of the game Oxford were able to slot the ball into the back of the net, but only after an number of blocks akin to Legoland. Despite several more opportunities from both sides, the score remained unchanged, and Sonning defended their lead with determination to find ourselves at the top of the league at c.o.b Saturday (think we should slow down a bit chaps).

Man of the Match: The standout player for Sonning this week was Stevo, who earned the Man of the Match title for his exceptional defensive performance. Despite most of the oppo's aerials ending up in the car park, with more shaves than a barber, he consistently thwarted Oxford's attacks and provided solid support to his teammates throughout the match.
