A Thrilling 3-3 Draw on a Hot Midday Push Back

This match report is proudly sponsored by Tobi Challis, the DoD for the game.

Sonning, September 16, 2023 - On a scorching midday push back, Sonning Men's 2nd XI took to the field against South Berks in a highly anticipated local clash. The match promised excitement as Sonning unveiled a new 4-3-3 formation, featuring some fresh faces eager to make their mark on the team.
The game kicked off with both teams showing intensity and a hunger for victory. However, it was South Berks who struck first, with a brilliantly executed short corner finding its way into the top of the net. Sonning found themselves trailing early, but they were determined to mount a comeback. Certainly not "a bad miss".
One of the standout players for Sonning was Harvey Richardson, who consistently looked dangerous on the right-hand side. His relentless drives down the flank created numerous opportunities and kept South Berks' defence on their toes. Agility only comparable to a Suzuki Jimny. The forwards made some superb leads, putting the pressure on the opposition.

Colm Hanlon, in true Colm fashion, equalized for Sonning shortly after having a screamer of a shot from a difficult angle disallowed. A story his festive inflatable can't wait to hear about. Game on! Sonning's fortunes changed when, in classic Challis fashion, a dribbler deflected its way through the goalkeeper's legs, putting Sonning ahead.

However, South Berks weren't ready to concede defeat. They executed a lightning-fast break that caught the defensive four off guard, and a well-placed slap shot found its mark in the bottom right corner, levelling the score at 2-2.
After a much-needed break, fuelled by Haribo and gallons of water, Sonning came out in the third quarter with renewed energy and purpose. They dominated possession, working the ball skilfully around the back, with Beasley and Toms orchestrating play. Promising signs emerged for the new formation with Stevo and Greenbank linking well down the right.
Building on the momentum and more blocks than Legoland, Hanlon won a short corner, allowing Captain Wall's well-practiced summer flick to put Sonning ahead 3-2. The captain's celebration echoed through the field, showcasing his passion and leadership. "That's our captain" uttered the bench.

Despite Sonning's dominance in possession, South Berks managed to find the back of the net once again, this time through a short corner, levelling the scores at 3-3. This was not helped by less-than-desirable green and yellow cards for Challis, who's on field experience being analogous to that of a game of UNO. In the end, it was a hard-fought battle that ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Big performances by a number of individuals with ALB's 4.8km shift (195kg deadlift if you hadn't heard), Green's gatekeeping in the centre and some match saving saves from the ever consistent Ali between the sticks. Particular recognition to our inhouse Welfare Officer Mr Young, who managed to not misidentify Harvey today. Growth.

In the midst of the intense battle, a fresh-faced JT emerged as a beacon of strength and dominance in the heart of the pitch. Physically imposing and unfazed by the scorching heat, JT showcased his prowess as he masterfully controlled the centre of the field. His sheer presence disrupted South Berks' attempts to gain a foothold in the midfield, and his precise passes and well-timed tackles were instrumental in Sonning's possession game. JT's ability to win crucial duels and distribute the ball with finesse made him an undeniable force to be reckoned with. His performance in the centre of the pitch was a testament to his unwavering commitment and underscored his pivotal role in Sonning's determined effort on that scorching September day. A deserved, Man of the Match award to add to the collection.

While D*ck of the Day honours were bestowed upon Challis. That is all.

This match showcased the spirit and determination of Sonning Men's 2nd XI and the promise of their new formation. With plenty lessons learned and areas to improve, the first fixture of the 23/24 league promises to be an exciting one against the new league members Milton Keynes this coming Saturday. Plenty of naan Wednesday chaps #COTN
