An early Saturday morning fixture meant for another rendition of the Champions League anthem to continue Sonning’s winning run. This time a 10am PB in Staines - the early bird catches the worm. Much to the dismay of Dutch Rob.
Staines started well and were piling the pressure on with a few early short corners. After some good saves from the defence and Sully, Sonning countered and scored a breakaway goal. Nicely taken round the goalie by Huw. Shortly after, Sonning bagged a second through their own short corner routine. A wide drag flick from Callum took a lovely deflection from a defender’s stick and the net bulged. 2-0 and HT.
Sonning knew the third goal was going to be the key in this game and unfortunately Staines kept knocking and managed to get one back. 2-1. The battle commenced with several stick tackles flying in. After a few warnings from the umpires they had finally seen enough. Card city incoming. First green card for Harvey for dangling a stick in. A few green cards for Staines who were starting to throw toys out of their prams. Sonning managed to take advantage of this and regain the 2 goal lead through Jimmy. 3-1.
Staines closed the gap back to 3-2 after Sonning left a few players free in the D. Sonning were determined not to let the hard work slip and managed to draw a few fouls which consequently led to two yellow cards for Staines players. Now Sonning could lead the charge and scored two more goals making it 5-2. Surely they were home and dry without any more drama. One more each for Huw and Jimmy.
The full time whistle went but that wasn’t the end of the drama. A Staines player thought he would confront the umpire and tell him what he really thought. Unsurprisingly the umpire didn’t like that and branded a red card.
MOM to birthday boy Huw Thomas.
