Newbury U12 (4) v Sonning U12 (1)

A typically freeezing day on Henwick Hill - fortunately the parents were pre warned and wrapped up warm against the freezing wind. We ended up with 12 players who each had to take a turn in goal and a turn as sub trying to stay warm on the sidelines.

Newbury turned out to be pretty strong, making some good breaks out of defence that caught us out a couple of times - mainly because everyone wants to play up front. I need to remind the midfielders that they are also defenders and need to sprint back when the other team have the ball. Our acting goalies were heroically managing to stop the first shot but then failure to clear it sideways led to a couple of goals to Newbury. Although Will was doing a good job in central defence, Sonning were playing the ball down the left hand side of the pitch too often. Eventually Daniel & Toby managed to link up well on the right and we made better progress eventually leading to a goal from Sean who found the left side of the goal with a great shot.

As the last third of the game wore on there were another few goals for Newbury despite determined defending from Melissa, Poppy and Ellie. Another break down the right from Toby and a great cross gave Katie a great chance but, despite being in a great position at the far post, she couldn't sort her feet out to bag the goal.
