Girls beat Newbury 2-1

Back on track
Sonning Girls were looking to get back on track after a couple of back to back defeats. We had a strong team out despite losing a couple of players to Berkshire selection and Thames Valley Minis. A lack of people wanting to defend meant we had to go with a back three of Charlotte M, Ellie and Melissa who did really well, tackling the Newbury attackers time after time so that Esme had nothing to do in the first session. At the other end our front three were Liverpool-esque, all pace and running but managing to hit the shots straight at the goalie time after time so it was scoreless going into the first break.
In the second session, we started dribbling less and passing more, which meant we got up the pitch far quicker using the pace of the twins, one move was particularly good with Zainab receiving and passing in one movement and setting Charlotte D off down the wing with the aging Umpire struggling to keep up. The opening goal came from a similar move to Naomi out of the left bombing along into the D and then having the composure to pass the ball round the keeper for Georgia to tap in at the right post. Bronwyn was having a good battle with her opposite number and managed to get free, driving into the D from the right and putting away a lovely lifted shot over the keepers right leg. We looked very in command at this stage and could / should have been three up when Katie’s hard shot into the goal was disallowed by Dad for the slightest touch on the back of the stick (I think).
The final session saw more good pressure from Sonning with Bo doing great in midfield and lining up some ferocious shots from short corners, Laura also had a number of chances but couldn’t get the ball passed the blue pads. It all got a bit wobbly for the final ten minutes as we were trying to rotate the defence, a long ball finding a forward who got into the D unchallenged and whacked the ball past Esme. Newbury then realized we only had three defenders and tried a few more long balls which made us all nervous but we held out for the last few minutes for a great win.
Newburys Player of the Day Bo owning the midfield
Coaches pick Naomi – great running down the wing and setting up the first goal
Thanks to Jorja for another confident performance with the whistle
