Girls lose out to Henley
By Chris Roberts
Lack of goalie cost us
We had a couple of debutants for our match against Henley which is great news for the squad, unfortunately the Boys had pinched the Goalie so we were going to have to make do with a kicking back for the duration of the game. A quick soaking during the warmup meant that we started a bit slower than usual, Henley had the good sense to hide in the dugout during the downpour. This meant that we let in a goal fairly early on in the first session as Henley got a goal from close range.
We found our feet in the second session with Bo realizing that she might actually be a midfielder after all, starting to influence things and working hard with Freya, Zianab and Izzy B, who had a great game. We managed to get our forwards Laura and new girl Emily more involved and created some good chances in attack. I thought we’d scored when the excellent Henley goalie lost the ball, spun around three times trying to find it, but Katie didn’t manage to get the finish and then fell over her own feet. We also realized that Annabel was finding lots of space on the right and Mia and especially Charlotte were able to drive out of defence and find her to good effect. Alas, the fact we had no keeper proved our undoing again and we let in another goal.
The third session was really end to end from both sides making for some good viewing from the parents in the dugout who had dried out and were starting to enjoy the sunshine. Melissa, Ellie and Izzy kept the Henley attack away from our open goal with some heroic defending. Another break down the field from our team lead to Lizzy getting the ball forward to Jasmine in the D who managed to deflect the ball past the keeper for a great debut goal. We spent the last ten minutes trying desperately to get the equalizer with Katie only managing to hit the keepers pads and a couple of short corners at the end not coming to anything
Thanks to Woffers, Jon & Kevin for their sideline assistance, Jorja for umpiring and the other parents for supporting
Henleys Man of the match Izzy B
Captains pick Charlotte Maskell, broke up the play well and ran strongly out of defence
