U14 Girls beat Oxford

Revenge for last season

Oxford gave us our heaviest defeat last year and it was obvious from the outset they were going to cause us a few problems. They had two or three players that could run with the ball at pace leaving the umpires struggling to keep up, especially after the Xmas party the night before.

However, we had some fine attacks of our own, Katie and Bronwyn doing a lot of the running that the Twins normally do for us allowing us to get up the field. Bron managed to get herself on the scoresheet after one of these flowing moves. Fortunately we had Ezme in goal to make some saves when the Oxford attack got through our defence, although she was disappointed with the one that got through. We ended the first third level.

We came into our own in the second third, Freya with her new shoes and Izzy B were battling everywhere in midfield, Zainab made an excellent save with her stick from a shot coming in at waist height, Kevin was on the touchline shouting advice to everyone, especially Mia and Izzy. Charlotte also had a great game, she’d learned from last week to wait for the attacker to make a mistake before taking the ball off her and getting the ball up to Lizzy in right midfield who had a great debut with some nice hard passes. Naomi and Laura were stretching the play upfront allowing Katie to score from the top of the D with a nice “sling push”. A couple of minutes later, Katie got a second from a short corner, not her cleanest hit ever but there was enough pace on the bouncing bomb for it to fool the keeper and nestle in the left corner.

Oxford weren’t downhearted though and came back at us in the final 20 mins buoyed on from the sideline by their Ladies team who were on next. Our defence really came into their own here with Melissa and Ellie making lots of stops at the back but doing a better job of clearing to the side and getting the ball out of danger. I thought we were going to hold out but a last minute short corner allowed Oxford to get another goal that their efforts deserved but we still came away with another three points
