U14 Girls - Sonning 1 to Henley 3
By Chris Roberts
Great end to end stuff
It didn’t start well, with the Maiden Erlegh girls on hockey tour and a couple of illnesses on the day we could only field a bare 11. On the flip side, there was a break in the rain for our fixture meaning we only got wet as opposed to completely soaked.
We matched Henley all over the pitch for the majority of the match, some great block tackles after Wednesdays training from Mia, Izzy W and Ellie in defence kept them at bay for most of the first 20. Louise had a fantastic debut in defence with some good tackles and clearances. However, although Zainab and Izzy B were great going forward in midfield they were struggling to do their defensive duties (it’s a very big pitch for little legs), we ended up getting out numbered and going 1-0 down. Second 20 we managed to get the twins more into the game, helping out the midfield, Katie and Freya were making good strong runs on the left and right, we started to create a lot more in the opponents D with Georgia missing a far post chance by inches and Katie hitting a post.
We went into the final 20 moving Georgia and Charlotte into midfield, which released Zainab and Izzy up front. All Izzy’s shrieking for the ball finally paid off and, after a couple of efforts, she got a goal on the inside of the left post. It was all end to end at this stage, the Henley goalie and Ezme both made about 5 or 6 good saves to keep it level. However, there was heart break at the end, although Ezme made the initial save twice the defence didn’t manage to get the ball away and we went down to two late goals, the last was a great finish from their MOTM.
MOTM Freya (as voted by Henley)
Coaches pick Louise – great to see her stepping up to U14’s
