Great win "away" at the Uni

Sonning Girls were keen to build on the impressive draw we got at Newbury a couple of weeks ago despite the fact we lost Megan to a broken finger after cycling in to a gate recently and Freya MT who was drafted in to make up the numbers in the Boys game. We handed out a couple more debuts to Bronwyn and Izzy B who wants to follow in her big sisters footsteps – we now have three Freyas, two Izzys and two identical twins in the squad to make things nice and confusing.

The first half of the game was pretty even but Sonning probably had the better play as we have managed to work out our best positions with a strong spine and faster players down the sides. Bo and twins Georgia and Charlotte making some strong runs from the midfield to get the ball into the P& R circle on a number of occasions, we had a couple of short corners with Jorja coming up from the back to give it a smack. P&R’s best player was at right back so we got Bronwyn attacking down our right to good effect and Katie’s strong reverse skills on the left making progress.

Jorja wanted to play midfield third quarter so Mia stepped into her place in defence to cover her runs up pitch. Izzy B was having a great debut with her, Izzy W and Freya winning the ball a number of times and distributing nicely. Meanwhile we were making more attacks and starting to look dangerous, Bo getting wiped out when 1 on 1 with the keeper. Sonning managed to break the deadlock with Bo and Georgia (I think) combining to cross to Bronwyn on the far post who swept it in with a good “thonk” on the backboard.

The last quarter was slightly chaotic with Jorja leaving early, everyone subbing off for a minute to get equal match time and Sonning pressing for another. We left ourselves exposed at the back a couple of times, Melissa was defending well but the heart in mouth moment came with two P&R attackers in our D behind “new to hockey” Chloe with a through ball rolling ominously towards her. I shouldn’t have worried though as she stopped it and got it off to the sideline without any fuss so Alice in goal didn’t have to add to the two touches of the ball that she got all game

Great win to Sonning 1-0

Scorer Bronwyn Watkins

P&R voted Man of the match Freya Newman
Toon’s pick Bronwyn (great debut performance down the right topped off with a goal)
