Another sunny day with a freezing wind at Henwick Lane saw Sonning’s 11 players quickly get into the first half. A strong spine in the middle of the pitch forced N&T down the sides as we’ve practiced. There was good counter attacking from both sides and the Sonning midfield were soon charging up and down the pitch trying to keep up. The few times N&T managed to get past Jorja & Meg in the middle of defence they came up against Ellie as kicking back who was fantastic, not even flinching as she stopped multiple shots from N&T star player number 1 – although no one knows quite how she managed to keep one of those shots out. Mia was holding up the central of midfield working the ball to Freya at right midfield and Charlotte up front. Although, Katie put one just wide of the left post and Bo managed to get the ball in the net just after the whistle had gone for a short corner, the first half ended scoreless.
I was worried that our 11 players would tire in the second half against the large N&T squad but they probably came out stronger with more great passing moves, Jorja self passing all her 16’s and getting the ball upfield nicely, Melissa and Poppy making some good challenges and getting stuck in. Ellie was still clearing everything but, although she got her stick to the ball, she couldn’t keep out a good strike from N&T star player number 2 as it ricocheted behind the backboard. Katie was having the game of her life down the left wing and kept working the ball to Georgia, the two of them combining with a barrage of shots which eventually allowed Georgia to sweep the ball in at the left post for 1-1. Sonning fought hard for the winner but still had a couple of scary moments in defence that Ellie dealt with, Katie even managed to get a lofted shot into the keepers gloves which would have made an awesome winner- maybe next time!
