Sonning Girls were left to rue some poor finishing in the first half which lead to a scoreline that probably didn't tell the whole picture of the game. For the second time in a row we came up against a team of over 15 players which overpowered us in the second half.
Sonning had the best of the opening quarter but the duo upfront of Freya and Katie both missed open goals which could have lead to a different outcome. There were a few new faces this week with twins Georgia and Charlotte on the flanks, fearless Alice between the posts and first timer Chloe making their first appearances in Sonning Blue. Henley grew into the game and managed to scramble the ball over the line to make it 1-0 at half time.
Henley brought out their big guns in the third quarter and managed to score three further goals despite the valiant efforts of Poppy and Ellie in the back line. Poor Alice in goal was left a little exposed but made some good saves and had a good debut. Moving Freya MT into the middle to support Freya Newman turned out to be a much better formation and she linked with Katie upfront who scored one goal which was disallowed as the Umpire (me) blew too early. Katie then got two proper goals, the second of which was a great flowing move, as Sonning got Ellie down the right wing to put in a good cross.
Better luck next time!
