This week the sevens returned to home soil for the first time this season to face newcomers to the league, and neighbours, Reading Rascals. Chad Bosman and Matt Hill were also returning for their first game of the campaign.
Facing a young team was always going to be a challenge and it was clear from the start we were going to have a mountain to climb especially with calls to pass to a blue shirt being made from one of the wings(both teams were wearing different shades of blue). The Rascals were extremely well disciplined and the pressure and speed were proving too much in the first half and at the break we finished 3-0 down.
A superb half-time talk by skipper Phil Cooper inspired the team to bring the basics back and play was quickly moving up field (Finally some recognition -PC).
Quick passing between newcomer Jon and 5s regular Elliot saw play heading high in the second half. Fast play from right wing Simon "Top Gun" Combstock saw the only shot on goal from the Sevens and a quick rebound which did not pay off. Rudi Eagling and Nathan Olds showed aptitude at playing multiple positions with Rudi claiming he was the “James Milner of the team.” Despite a valiant effort from the defence of Steve, Andy, Andy, Rob and Jerry 3 more goals were conceded before the final whistle was blown.
The final scoreline in no way reflects the effort given by all members of the team in a tough fight with a very experienced team that will go far.
MoM: Elliot Wise who dictated play through the middle
DoD: Simon Combstock for his “Pass it to a Blue shirt!” remark.
