Well played and great fun

Sonning started the game in a dominant fashion which included a goal after three minutes. Eddie(???) hit the post, then Jay hit the keeper, followed by Phil hitting the backboard from 1 yard out. The early goal was a huge boost and the 7’s played the first half with great confidence and energy. Abingdon gave Sonning a lot of time on the ball and, quiet rightly, Sonning used this to their advantage. Sonning should have scored repeatedly with easy efforts going astray (We are looking at you Russ) and fine saves by the keeper. Abingdon must have been relieved that they were not subject to a larger deficit at half time.

The second half started at a slower pace. Sonning dominated possession more than they had in the first half however the movement going forward was less assertive. Sonning continued to press at 16’s and play was remaining mostly within the Abingdon half. However as the half went on Abingdon upped their efforts and started to become first to the ball. Fatigue set into the Sonning midfield who became more spread out which gave a knock on effect to the back line who became less inclined to press up in support. Abingdon began to utilise the extra space afforded them on the pitch and possession became more even.

Team's rarely get clean sheets and therefore 1-0 started to feel less and less comfortable as the second half ticked by. A second goal for Sonning would have been a sufficient cushion to see the game out, but in a rare bit of genuine action in the Sonning D it was Abingdon who bagged the second leaving the points shared at full time.

This was a well contested game with good attitude, spirit and effort by both teams. Sonning looked very strong at the back and very comfortable on the ball. All in all this was an enjoyable encounter with some passages of really nice hockey and no contentious incidents and thanks is extended to the Umpires for their competent management of the game.

MotM Chris Hinton. For effort and effectivness

DotD Russell Syvier, for missing the easiest chance he will have all season
