After only 2 weeks of training, this was my first experience of playing hockey and therefore this is very much a novice view of the game – much of it was a blur!.
The match started well and we dominated much of the early play. Our new member Syed Hassan and Phil "best calves in the game" Cooper made some great forays into Oxford’s defence, whilst Russ Syvier and Dave Ransome stretched out the wings with some great runs, passing into Jay Churchill in the centre. We took an early lead with a great tap in from Syed and the assist from Dave. There were many early chances which forced the Oxford keeper into making saves including a knee high rocket from Jeremy which Phil deflected into the top corner only to be saved by the keepers outstretched stick. Oxford were quick on the counter-attack, but the central defence of Andy Fry and Jerry Cresswell, supported by Jeremy “They will not pass” Matheson kept them at bay for most of the half. Simon was solid on the left, whilst I was on a steep learning curve of positioning, tactics and trying to keep track of everyone around me. Oxford finally broke through and despite a valiant effort from Rhys just before the end of the half.
Mac, clearly revelling from being freed from his pads, made a charging, but ultimately unsuccessful run for goal. Jumbo switching with Syed and Phil made some great runs from midfield. I was most impressed by Ned's defensive positioning – how can you move so fast and yet still keep your stick so low?
The second half went largely Oxfords way. Their youth overcame our match fitness. We still had a lot of play in their half and probed the D, but their defence held and we then suffered on the counter-attack. I was thoroughly impressed by the work rate of the whole team, but Andy stood out for me for his runs tracking back against some nimble and fit teenagers. As our energy drained, Oxford sensed their chance and a further 3 goals made it into the back of the net. It could have been a lot more if it wasn’t for an excellent standard of keeping from Rhys.
Overall, I don’t think the score reflected the positives that we took from the game and we can be hopeful of a good run in the league this year. As a first outing for me, I had a great time, was grateful for the support and advice I received from the team and I can’t wait for the next match. The pizza and chips afterwards and a chance to get to know my new team mates was an excellent bonus.
MOM: Andy Staig – for his maiden game and surviving the full 70 minutes
DOD: Shared between Andy Fry - for missing an easy ball that eventually led to a goal and Phil (undeserved)– for the most elegant and yet unconvincing dive
