Starting the season in style

The first league game of the season saw us facing a younger and fitter side, something that may well become a recurring feature of 6s games this season.

Leighton Buzzard dominated initially but the 6s soon found their stride and a short corner shot from Anthony Oke saw Sonning take the lead for 30 seconds or so until the goal was disallowed. Heartened by this early chance, the game started to go Sonning’s way and a slow motion goal from Lewis Cowper saw us finishing the first half 1 – 0 up.

The half time oranges seemed to sap Sonning’s strength and we came back very sluggishly while Leighton Buzzard had it all to play for. Luckily for us, despite creating several short corners, Leighton Buzzard failed to follow through with a goal and a second Sonning goal from Chris Stone sealed the victory.

It was an entertaining game all round with special mention to Andrew Denham for his mid-game ballet performance and Dave Latimer for providing a running commentary on his own mistakes.

Captain Ashley Churchill, meanwhile, was a great source of amusement and showed us all why he doesn’t play higher by consistently playing through the middle of the pitch and gifting numerous balls to the opposition. We live in hope that he will one day understand the rule of only passing to players wearing the same colour shirt as him.
