Hard loss, but Sonning show their colours and promise for the season to come

Hot day, lack of players, and a sticky pitch were not enough to break the resolve of this Sonning team.

An unfortunate lack of players available on the first preseason game meant that the 3s were sent to RAF Halton with 10 players, with the great Ollie Wadders stepping in for the first half to help before he had to shoot off.

The game started slow with Sonning back line struggling to give decent fast ball on the slow surface but gradually grew with confidence as time went on. Unfortunately, we ended the first half 2-0 down and facing a second half with 10 players on a very hot day.

The second half was better, with the midfield driving Sonning forward and making us a regular threat going forward.

Unfortunately, time took it's toll and gaps opened in the back from time to time and an effective Aylesbury forward line took any opportunity they could squeeze out of the Sonning defence. However, a bouncing ball into the D from Toon passed numerous players and found Elliott Wise touching the ball past the Aylesbury keeper to get an consolation goal.

Even without the chance of winning the game, Sonning made every effort to make the most of the unfortunate situation. Working on interlinking and keeping the ball against the higher number of opposition.

The game ended 7-1 but was a good performance by Sonning, showing the dedication and commitment that will serve us well during the season when the results really matter.

Special mention to Mitch (GK) for pulling off more great saves than were let in, Toon and Colin for keeping an ever fading midfield from falling apart and providing the rocks for Sonning to work off, Elliott Weiss and Andrew for their debuts for the club, Elliott for getting the first goal of the season, and for Wadders for helping out where he can after having already played a game that day.

(Charlie, Stoney and Alex - if you're reading this, you did very well as well, but I needed company off the list of special mentions...)
