Witney 1st XI 2 – 0 Sonning 1st XI

Sonning win streak ends at Witney despite a dogged performance
Sonning travelled to Witney with an unchanged squad for the 3rd week running after comprehensive victories against Reading and Oxford. Fancying their chances of upsetting the league leaders, they setup to play their usual aggressive press in what was an intense and well fought game throughout.
With the scores tied 0-0 at half time, the game was nip and tuck, with Sonning keeper Ben Sully making a number of good saves. It was Witney who were able to edge ahead shortly after half time however, with an attack on the break being converted well for 1-0.
Sonning had just one opportunity to equalise against a stingy Witney defence, but the close range effort went frustratingly skywards, and shortly after, Witney extended their lead with a second goal following a melee in the Sonning circle. 2-0 with an hour played.
The away side dominated the latter stages of the game looking to force their way back into the fixture, but Witney held firm to keep their clean sheet and take the points. Sonning hold their heads high with a decent performance, perhaps lacking the quality in front of goal that has served them well of late, but they came up against a good side who took their chances well. Next up they host West Hampstead 2nd XI at Sonning Lane.
