Sonning started poorly, and were 4-1 down at half time, with a pinpoint penalty corner drag-flick from skipper Stephen Ridley the only highlight. After half time, when their opposition went down to 10 men, Sonning became slightly more confident, and actually pulled the score back to 4-2, with a near post screamer from David Painter that the Oxford keeper may well have nightmares about for a couple of weeks.
This score-line didn't last long however, as Sonning's naivety in chasing the game really played into their opponents' hands. Oxford upped the tempo and the quality to put in 6 goals without reply in the last 20mins against the increasingly tired and frankly disappointed home side. Credit goes to the away team, who were painfully professional and clinical in front of goal until the last whistle.
Sonning have just a few days to shake this loss out of their system, with the next challenge an away trip to Wallingford 1st XI. The only solace from the days proceedings is that all their relegation rivals also lost their fixtures, while Sonning maintain the best goal-difference amongst their fellow league strugglers.
