The sun was splitting the trees, everyone was bang on time and we played like we were on fire....
Oh hang on....
So it was pouring with rain, Sinead was spectacularly late and nobody can really remember what happened but why let the truth get in the way of a good story!
Facing one of the Ladies 2s “favourite” teams, Sonning were under pressure from the start, with the defence working hard to keep the ball out. The first half was end to end, with some scrappy play from both side. As usual when playing South Berks, tensions started to grow with a some physical tackles and unsavoury language... and not just from Lorraine. Unfortunately the summer break showed and a couple of misjudged passes at the top of the D gave South Berks the opportunity to score twice in the first half. Even mighty oaks have an off moment.
Sonning's half time team talk reiterated a focus on the basics and to stop giving the ball away cheaply. Second half started stronger and Sonning had a period of better play, stringing more passes together increasing the pressure in a south Berks defensive half, winning short corners but failing to get them in the back of the net. Some great work by the defence, awesome saves by Harri, as well as silky skills from newcomers in the team Erika and Pip kept us in the game. Despite a much better second half, Sonning conceded a further goal. Final whistle and a 3-0 loss, however as this was only the first league game of the season with many new personnel and players playing out of position there was certainly plenty to build on as the team bed in over the coming games.
Player- Pip, Erica and Grassick
Muff - Charli “chip n” Dale for dinking the ball beautifully into her own feet!
