Ladies 1 beat Wallingford
By Katharine Pike
G’day mates! It was a not-so-beaut arvo in the village of Wallingford and the Ladies 1s rocked up to the pitch knowing that a win was all they could afford to come away with, to keep promotion back to South in their grasp; as it was now bloody tight at the top of Prem 1.
Dunny trips & warm-ups completed, Sonning took to the pitch.
They didn’t have to wait too long to make their mark, as by the 4th minute, some gnarly open play passes from Kev to KP led to a saved shot, but the rebound was put away by Sheila. You beauty!
The second goal came in the 13th minute, with some more bonza passing down the right between Kev & KP, and again this led to a shot put away by Sheila. Crikey!
In the 24th minute, it became a fair dinkum demonstration of solo skill, with Sheila turning over the ball, beating a player, and with a one-on-one with the keeper in front of her, calmly dummied to put the GK on the floor and the ball in the now empty goal. 3-0; no drama!
Sonning didn’t have to wait too much longer for the fourth, with a 30th minute penalty corner Wevin (a Wendy pass from top of the D for Kev to ‘hav a go’) resulting in conversion; 4-0 at half-time. Heaps of goals so far…
The start of the second half brought on a fight-back from the oppo, but Sonning got stuck in and fought off the Wallingford feistiness.
Against the run of play, a penalty corner to us in the 47th minute, was slipped left to Ruth, who slapped the ball towards goal, and was edged in by Kev. Good onya, mate!
The final Sonning blow came in the 54th minute with yet another goal from a penalty corner – with a ripper of a straight strike from Gallibird, down the left post. Strewth!
Full time, 6-0, and Bob’s your uncle, the L1s were back to winning ways! Long may this continue…!
The girls were stoked! Time for a celebratory barbie and a cold one back at the clubhouse!
Muff: Rita for filming herself instead of the game
