Our History
Sonning Hockey Club had been around - in one form or another - for over 60 years!
We can trace our history back to Reading YMCA who, under 'founder' John Poole, formed a mens and a mixed side in 1946. The first teams were called the 'Travaux Hockey Club' and recruited mainly from local authority nationalised industries.
Early in 1960 a ladies side was formed at the Royal County of Berkshire Sports and Social Club. This side and the Travaux Club merged under the Sonning Hockey Club banner in 1982, at the time running two ladies and two mens teams, and a mixed team.
And from there we've gone from strength to strength.
We're now running 6 mens and 5 ladies teams (including a full vets side), and our Colts section was awarded the Club 1st National Hockey accreditation for junior coaching and development in December 2004.
We are particularly proud to say that we were the first club in Berkshire, and, at the time of the award, were one of only 20 clubs in the UK to achieve this accreditation.
Our home is at the Royal County of Berkshire Sports & Social Club, Sonning Lane, Sonning - just off the A4 going out of Reading, next to Reading Hockey Club. Congregate here for those all-important after-match teas, and the even more important social events. The club has showers, squash courts, four tennis courts, snooker and a party room. Not to mention the bar...
And we're always looking for new players - you're assured of a warm welcome, some competitive hockey and a host of social events - just get in touch.
