The Mighty Sonning Legends march on to the last 8 of the Investec Womens O45s with a 4-2 win over Chichester.

Slaughter to the Lambs!

Yet again we are immensely proud to report that the mighty Sonning Legends convened for a super Sunday fixture in the O45s cup with members from every ladies team. True Sonningness!!

This second round fixture required an epic convoy to the far off kingdom of Chichester. Not only did we manage to field a squad of 15 players but a small phalanx of supporters arrived to warm our cockles from the sideline - thank you excellent chaps!

Drugs tests duly failed, arms branded, operation plan from Commander Willers and a full Pikey warm up saw the team fully prepped for the game.

On-pitch captain Annie Oke gave a rousing pre-match speech to the team and we took to the field full of confidence and trust in each other, knowing we'd enjoy the game come what may. Sure enough, Chichester scored first from open play. 1-0 down...

... for just two minutes before Sonning won a short corner and Gallibird lobbed a beautiful shot over the goalkeeper to equalise.

Some lovely saves from Rose, great defending from on-form Mei, Pikey and Annie and a rampaging Lars (nose bleed!!) kept the game nicely balanced at 1-1 at half time.

Oranges, a word from our President, and another team shout and we were off again.

After a short burst from Chichester, Sonning were back in possession and the mid-fielders started to build a lot of very handsome play down both flanks thanks to Galli, CJ, Stacey, and Willers.

I don't know about you but I often think long corners are a pain in the bum to get right. When you have clever monkeys like GB and AJ in your team this is less of an issue. Long corner from a central position, darting run from AJ, a few nifty twiddles past defenders and then a reverse shot from the top of the D was deflected in by either the defender or CJ - it was definitely CJ - to give The Legends the lead! 2-1 Sonning.

Some frictionless substitutions followed and we welcomed our incredibly enthusiastic team-mates Bridge, Lynn C, Lynne G and Jo onto the pitch and into the game and we were soon rewarded with another series of short corners.

After a couple of practice runs and largely thanks to her pre-match backboard sound check, Pikey took control and blasted a short corner strike into the corner of the goal. 3-1. Get in.

Chichester were not done yet and in particular their brilliant centre forward: Sally 'The Bullet' Bradley added another touch of class to the game. On her own up front, she was channeled into seeming safety on the baseline to the left of the Sonning goal from where she roofed the ball into the top of the net from an outrageous angle. What a goal! She rightfully received high fives from both teams after that one. 3-2 with 5 minutes to go - would this go the same way as the previous round?

I don't think our legs (or our supporters) could have taken that so thank goodness that a few minutes later Coops managed to sneak through a couple of Chichester defenders and pop the ball to AJ on the P spot for a final flourish. The game finished 4-2 to the Mighty Legends.

We must thank the Chichester team and the umpires for a really great game, played in the best of spirits. The teas were good too :)

Hockey was the winner today!!
