SONNING 3 - 0 HARROW
19th January 2008
What a way to start the second half of our season! A nice win away from home which also took us into 2nd place.
A dull and damp afternoon at the West London Academy on a spongy pitch was our welcome back to the league, but it didn't take too long for us to settle back into the groove.
John Flint discovered he quite liked playing bottom of the diamond. His ability to break down Harrow attacks and spread the ball around gave us a confident solid basis to work from. And he combined well with Patrick Horne who caused Harrow all sorts of problems from midfield - where does he get his energy from?
If anyone needs a reminder of what makes a good winger, they just need to watch Antony Matheson. Antony's one of our colts, and in his 2nd year in the Men's team, but knows how to position himself to make the pass from team mates easy, he can run menacingly at defenders, and tackles back to help our defence. He complained that the Christmas Pud' was slowing him down, but there was certainly no sign of it in his work rate.
2 excellent goals from Antony, one from a short corner at long last, took the pressure off and I was more concerned about our weaker left flank than the possibility of Harrow scoring.
So, 2 - 0 at half time and it was just a matter of continuing in the same vein and see how many more we could score. This was not going to be helped by the loss of Nick Digby though - his heal injury had flared up again and he couldn't continue.
Harrow saw a bit more of the ball in the 2nd half and chances to increase our lead came and went, but we carried on putting passes together and Antony finally got his hat-trick with a deft reverse stick shot.
All 13 players contributed to this important result and the Harrow umpire remarked at how well we moved and passed the ball. Nice one chaps! Next up is a home match versus Ashford.
Man of the Match: Antony Matheson - great attacking play down the right flank, excellent tackling back when needed and 3 fabulous goals.
Thanks go to Joyce, Andrew & Jeremy. When 2/3rds of the team don't drive, I just know I can count on them to get everyone there and back.
