SONNING 6 - 1 AYLESBURY
29th September 2007
Saturday saw the start of the 2007/08 for the Mens 2nd XI, with a number of new faces and high levels of excitement for the season ahead. Looking around the team there were a number of rejuvenated faces including a newly trimmed Rimmer, Sergeant Ricky and his paduwan learner Ben, the unpenetrable wall which is China and poor Nick who has clearly been in a hot wash cycle all summer!! Welcome also to John who had a debut to dream of (until the inevitable night on the beers that is, and proof that he has caught Tufty's inability to close the deal!) with 2 well taken goals and a set of go-faster stripes to rival Painter's.
As Captain, Pasty proved he is the right man for the job by dropping himself to the bench and staying there for the whole match. There was talk of him being injured but we all know that in reality his tree-surgeon style tacking wasn't required for this delicate demolition of Aylesbury.
The match itself was rather one-sided in the end, mainly due to Sonning taking control of the match and not letting Aylesbury settle. Ricky and Ben controlled the midfield in the regimented manner you would expect from Her Majesty's Own, Rimmer, Spring and John ran tirelessly up front creating some great opportunities and supported by the forward runs of Wadders and Eighteen. The defence was never really in trouble with some awesome tackling as usual from the wall which is China, confidently marshalled by Harris and the balance of attack/defence offered by Tufty and Nick.
Overall a comfortable performance was enforced by 6 Sonning goals [Harris (2), McGloin (2), Eighteen (1) & Spring (1)] with only a very well struck short corner as consolation for Aylesbury.
Rather predictably Captain Pasty was awarded Dick of the Day, however he was sat happily in the bar dreaming of being Tufty and sporting his pink shirt for good measure - so probably fair enough!! John was awarded a very deserved Man of the Match for his two goal debut, however had anyone seen his ability to double tap when required later in the evening this decision could easily have changed.
