SONNING 6 - 1 AYLESBURY
6th October 2007

Saturday was all about the rugby, or at least that was Sonning 2s excuse for losing away at Eastcote on Saturday! Despite the peak physical condition of the team, the excitement and tension of watching England turn-over the Wallabies got the better of us and sapped most of the pre-game spirit which should have been channelled into producing a performance to match the previous weeks.

On a brand-spanking new Eastcote pitch there were no excuses for a poor performance (apart from the areas of astro which they have forgotten to pull tight of course - doh!). The match started well with Sonning controlling the pace and shape from the off, even attempting the "chip and charge" method of starting the match. Problem is you are then supposed to try and put pressure on the opposition defence - something which seemed to bypass everyone. That set the tone for the match, with Sonning conceding two weak goals in the first 10 minutes from which they never recovered.

In response, Will Spring continued his goal scoring run of form with a fine reverse finish, but too many opportunities were missed in general for Sonning to make further impact on the scoreline before half-time. When a short corner was awarded to Eastcote in rather dubious circumstances and the rebound from the resulting drag flick was tapped in, this signed the end for Sonning who had just managed to play themselves back into the game.

So a bad weekend for the 2s on the pitch, but as usual a masterful display at the first Club Night of the season, on our favourite surface? the bar!!

Eastcote 3 v Sonning 1 (Will Spring)

Man of The Match: Mark Darby - For solid and reliable tackling at the back, and generally covering for the Captain :o)
Dick of The Day: Tufty - For deciding Sat-Nav was wrong and that Mat-Nav knew a quicker route to Eastcote - via the M3!!
