SONNING 3 - 1 AYLESBURY
29th September 2007
Sonning HC continued their rich vein of form this weekend with a win in their opening league fixture away at Aylesbury. Sonning played Aylesbury as their first league game of last season and were on the receiving end of their heaviest defeat of recent years losing 6-1. As a measure of Sonning's growing strength the result and the performance was a very different story for the start of the 2007 season with Sonning grabbing 3 goals and all 3 points.
Sonning maintained their usual solid and well-organised defence and made opportunities for Aylesbury hard to come by. Mid way through the first half Chris Hinton eluded his defender to pop up at the far post and open the scoring before half time. Aylesbury looked like they may make for a close fixture early in the second half with a deflected goal from the left and a momentary lapse in concentration from Sonning's defence. However order was quickly restored with a disguised touch from the illusive Hinton which beat his man and the left the keeper stood still as the ball hit the far post and safely into the backboard.
The game was wrapped up late in the second half when former captain Neil Pursell carried the ball 60 metres to the base line before scrambling the ball home from a misdirected shot. Strong performances from man of the match Dan Anderson and centre half Mark Dobby where crucial in both the strong defence and the multiple attacks that they launched and the team was pleased to welcome back Steve King whose contribution and experienced helped steer home Sonning to victory.
