Mens 5s : Much needed win renews belief for Mens 5ths (27th Feb 2011)Sonning 5s 3-1 Tring 3s Sonning mens 5ths recorded a much needed first win of 2011 against a skillful Tring side. Sonning were the faster out of the traps, taking an early 1-0 lead after an early ball into the D from Simon Betson was coolly dispatched by Grant Strudley. However a lapse in concentration was punished by the swift Tring Forwards meaning that Sonning were soon pegged back to 1-1. Following an injury to Geoff Samuels, Sam Molina stepped into the defensive breach at right back and Sonning rode their luck until half-time relying on resilient defending from the evergreen Jon Warbey, Kevin Mist and Paul Cutler as well as some fine saves from Alec Puddle (Alec Pond's twin 2nd cousin). Sonning once again weathered the storm early in the 2nd half and hung on as Tring's profligancy in front of goal cost them with a host of chances going narrowly wide of the Sonning goal, whilst Sonning's ruthlessness in front of goal eventually paid dividends. A break away down the right hand side with Chris Root stretching the Tring defence, before finding Matt Price inside the D who deftly lifted the ball over the on-rushing goalkeeper to restore Sonning's lead at 2-1. Sonning soaked up the pressure as Tring attempted to force an equaliser. Then Steve Ford finally sprung his trap, which had been 60 minutes in the making. Having lured the Tring team into his machinations by blasting every previous ball, he by-passed their suprised midfield as they prepared for the big welt with a delicate short pass. This initiated a crisp passing move, culminating in Grant Strudley's pass circumventing the Tring Goalkeeper to allow Chris Root to dispatch his 2nd goal for the 5s this season and ensure a well needed 3 points. The result could have ended with an even more flattering scoreline however Grant Strudley showed that his reverse was not as deadly as his open stick as the ball dribbled past the post with the goal at his mercy. Goals: Grant Strudley, Matt Pice, Chris Root Assists: Simon Betson, Chris Root, Grant Strudley MOM: Chris Root DOD: Grant 'No reverse' Strudley
