SONNING 1 - 1 KIDLINGTON
29th September 2007
Riding on a high following their league debut win last week, Sonning Vets travelled to Kidlington with a depleted squad. Forced for lose their sweeper to umpire, and fielding two players just recovering from long-term injury and another two who haven't played for some years, it was going to be a tough call!
From the outset, Kidlington piled on the pressure while Sonning got to grips with an unfamiliar format and unfamiliar players. Despite the pressure, the Sonning defence held firm until just before the half-time whistle when a Kidlington shot rebounded between the forward's stick and the keeper's pads, up into the air and over the head of keeper Sue Hicks.
After a half time rejig, Sonning took control of the game and played some attacking hockey resulting in three penalty corners. Unfortunately the set pieces didn't pay off this week and Kidlington managed to clear each one.
Sonning's equalizing goal, when it eventually came, was from a defensive clearance which made it all the way to Sharon Oldham lurking in the Kidlington 25 yard area. She picked it up, ran (yes, ran!) and with only the keeper to beat, scored!
A fair result - not as convincing as last week, but hopefully we'll be back to full strength next week.
