SONNING 3 - 0 MAIDENHEAD
22nd September 2007

Playing their first game of the season, and their first ever league game as a veterans team, Sonning Vets were on good form and ready to make history for Sonning Hockey Club!

Playing in front of a capacity crowd of five (!), Sonning took control from the whistle and dominated play - functioning well as a unit despite their five month summer lay-off. Putting Maidenhead constantly under pressure, it was only a matter of time before Sonning won a penalty corner. A superbly accurate strike out by Anji Higgins to Sharon Oldham resulted in a mis-hit by the striker, and the ball was easily cleared by Maidenhead in an attack that was swiftly dealt with by the Sonning defence.

Solid play by Debbie Webb, Sara Edgerton and Jill Grindal in midfield saw the ball making its way back to the forwards, resulting in another penalty corner. No mis-hit this time as the same Higgins-Oldham one-two move resulted in the wonderful sound of ball hitting back-board! Another penalty corner saw the same move prove successful, and Sonning went into the half-time break 2-0 up.

End-to-end play in the second half saw the Sonning defence remaining solid and 'keeper Sue Hicks making some strong attacking clearances. The third goal, coming just before the end of play, was from another Higgins-Oldham short corner routine.

A more than encouraging league debut.
