SONNING 2 - 1 SCARLET RUNNERS

Our victory today was applauded off the astro by our capacity crowd of Jan as sub, and Jill Morland. Having suffered a galling defeat against Runners earlier in the season Sonning were fired up for reversal.

Runners started well with some good possession, timing and passing to put the ball consistenly at the Sonning defence. But the defence prevented too many shots with Carol Reader and Carol Miles firmly rebutting Runners’ forays. Sonning managed to move back on to the attack and were rewarded when Anji Higgins scored from a fine acutely angled shot from the left.

Determined not to let Runners equalise, Sonning maintained the pressure and gave the forwards several chances, from one of which Fran blasted high into the right hand corner. After a shaky start with Sonning, owing to injury, Fran, has now shown the ability which we expected from her long playing career at Maidenhead.

Runners did not give up and played some good hockey and were rewarded with a consolation goal minutes from the end.
