SONNING 1 - 6 ABINGDON PILGRIMS

Maybe it was the late start, long lunches or the prospect of Club Night later that day but Sonning Ladies 3s had a woeful, lethargic start which was an extreme contrast to the energetic, focused Abingdon side.

Barely ten minutes had gone by and the opposition were 2-0 up with the Sonning defence being completely over-run. Another the minutes and another two goals down - something had to change. Player of the match and captain Claire Thrussell, decided to switch formation to a sweeper system which meant the rampaging opposition were held until half time at 0-4.

A severe talking to at half time about responsibility, marking, wanting it etc etc seemed to pay dividends in the second half as Sonning actually scored a goal and only let in two more...

Generally a competitive but sporting game, apart from the Abingdon forward who felt it necessary to say 'how sluggish she was today' as she slotted in the sixth goal!!! This comment alone plus team pride should ensure that Abingdon don't get quite such an easy ride on the return fixture.
