SONNING 2 - 4 SLOUGH
22nd September 2007
Sonning faced a tough match against Slough Ladies 2's, who were the early season league leaders and both teams had achieved high scoring wins respectively in their first league matches last week.
The match opened at a fast tempo and following an opening 10 minutes of constant Slough pressure, the Sonning defence worked hard to ensure that the game remained goalless for 25 minutes. As the Sonning players started came to terms with the fast Slough attackers, there was a swift break which led to the first goal in the 25th minute. The ball started in the Sonning defence and there were some great quick one-twos spanning the entire length of the pitch with some really great passing. Then a ball was crossed into the Slough 'D', where Kelly Leversuch-Roberts hit the ball cleanly past the keeper into the bottom corner from a tight angle! 1-0 to Sonning. However, this appeared to spur the Slough attackers on and less than 2 minutes later, Slough managed to break through our defence and were awarded a short corner, which resulted in a goal. 1 - 1. 4 minutes later, Slough secured their second goal from another well taken short corner. Sonning regrouped and continued to fight back and perhaps to the surprise of Slough, scored a well-deserved equaliser in the 34th minute. Again from open play, Katy Peters flicked the ball over the advancing keeper and at halftime; the score was 2-2.
Slough started the second half in a very determined manner and through some strong play from their main playmaker, they scored twice more in the 36th (short corner) and 45th minute (open play). The Sonning Ladies never gave up and the whole team worked really hard and defended well throughout the game, with only one of the Slough goals occurring from open play. It was an excellent team performance from Sonning against surely one of this season's favourite teams for promotion. This performance surely suggests a promising start to this year's season and gives a strong platform on which to build our performances.
