SONNING 4 - 0 NEWBURY & THATCHAM
6th October 2007
Sonning 2's fielded a strong 12-player squad for the Newbury & Thatcham fixture. Sonning started very strongly, with the vast majority of the play in the Newbury half. Following a number of shots on goal, it was after just ten minutes that the breakthrough came. Sue Patterson crossed a lovely ball from the right hand corner and Gemma Holmes knocked it into the bottom left hand corner of the net. 1 - 0.
For the rest of the first half, there was continuous pressure on the Newbury goal and their keeper made a number of important saves to keep the score at 1-0 at half time.
Sonning started the second half in the same manner they had ended the first and soon scored their second goal - a short corner, stopped and struck sweetly by Caroline Smith from the top of the D, which flew into the goal.
Sonning continued to pile pressure on the Newbury goal and a shot from Gemma Holmes, which was destined for the corner of the net, was stopped by the defence on the line with a foot. The resultant penalty flick was coolly converted by the newly appointed Captain, Mei Jones, despite the extreme verbal pressure of the chanting from the Newbury supporters. 3 - 0.
Sonning continued to pressure Newbury and the fourth goal was scored from a long corner struck by Sally Burns from the right hand side, edged on by Claire McKewan and then impressively thumped into the net by Kelly Corder who was on the left hand side of the goal.
4 - 0 was a very pleasing result, with the whole team playing well and managing to ensure that Newbury finished the match without a single shot on the Sonning goal.
Team: Rose Scales; Mei Jones; Caroline Smith; Beth Savory; Sue Patterson; Claire McKewan; Gemma Holmes; Briony Phillips; Sally Tunnicliffe, Kelly Corder; Marie; Renee.
Player of the match: Briony Phillips
Muff of the Day: A close run thing this week ... Marie falling over her own feet and completing a somewhat awkward forward roll right in front of the rather raucous, possibly slightly intoxicated, Newbury supporters was a popular choice. However, the winner this week was Mei Jones, who in her first game as Ladies 2's Captain managed to score a penalty flick and then a few minutes later a dubious tackle earned her a green card for ''causing the breakdown of play with no intent to play the ball!!!!! Oops!
