SONNING 4 - 1 WORTHING (EHA VASE)
4th November 2007
Following a bye to the 2nd round, Sonning set out to keep up with their track record in the Vase last season after just losing out in the final.
From the moment the whistle went, Sonning were clearly playing this game as a fluid team, players linking up well with each other to create chance after chance in Worthing's D. Due to a brilliant performance from the Worthing keeper, Sonning were unable to put any goals away before half time despite the numerous shots on goal. To make matters worse, Worthing took advantage of their one shot on goal and put the ball past the Sonning defence, making the score 1-0 at the half time interval.
The 2nd half saw Sonning restart the game with renewed energy and confidence, maintaining possession and showing great patience on the ball. For 10 minutes Sonning were still denied a goal by Worthing, until a fantastic penalty corner strike from Pauline Baxter broke the seal.
For the remainder of the game, Sonning continued to attack from all sides, scoring a further goal through Wendy Adler after some good team work in open play.
Minutes later, Sonning got their third goal following an impressive show of stickwork and commitment from the forwards, resulting in Airlie Halliday sweeping the ball past the keeper from behind her and whilst on the floor!
A 4th goal from Anneliese Churchill rounded off a brilliant team performance that takes Sonning through to the 3rd round against Southend.
